Gracie Boots Turns Chapters of Her Teenage Years Into New EP Teenage Reality
Gracie Boots’ new EP, Teenage Reality, brings together a collection of songs shaped by the experiences, relationships, and emotions that have defined her teenage years. Instead of treating the whole project as a single story, Gracie Boots gives each track a chance to stand on its own, being inspired by something unique that happened during her life and the emotions connected with it. Taken together, those individual stories create a broader portrait of a young songwriter figuring out who she is, what matters to her, and what she wants her future to look like.

Exploring the Complexities of Growing Up
The EP was born out of Boots’ need to be honest with herself about the aspects of teenage life that do not usually fall into the neat story. The teen years come with a multitude of responsibilities and expectations, including balancing school, friends, family, extracurriculars, and the stress of thinking about what comes next, on top of learning how to navigate one’s own emotions. All of these aspects were naturally conducive to becoming the source of Boots’ songwriting. Boots wanted her project to reflect the reality of the teen years – the combination of exciting memories and moments, but also the uncertainty, complicated connections, and hard-to-describe emotions.
“The bigger picture that I am trying to paint through the Teenage Reality project is what it means to be an imperfect teenager,” says Boots. This concept allows for the EP to include various facets of Boots’ life without necessarily reaching the same conclusion with every single track.
Relationships and Personal Experiences Shape the EP
Relationships become one of the EP's most consistent subjects. Gracie Boots draws from the people around her and from specific experiences, sometimes building an entire song around something that happened and other times beginning with a feeling she has about someone in her life. “Seventeen Today,” for example, centers on her relationship with her mother and the realization that leaving for college will eventually change the dynamic they share.
Other songs take their inspiration from more complicated moments. Boots describes parts of “Bed I Made” and “Wrapped Around Me” as particularly challenging to put into words, even though neither song was necessarily difficult. The bridge of “Bed I Made” required her to examine how she responds when circumstances become overwhelming, while the second verse of “Wrapped Around Me” took time because she knew exactly what she wanted to express but struggled to find lyrics that followed the melody and captured the thought accurately.
Turning Real Experiences Into Songwriting
A focus on individual experiences plays a significant role in Gracie Boots’ approach to writing songs. Even though the overarching themes of the entire EP stem from her experiences, she does not always use lyrics that provide an exact depiction of what she has gone through. At times, slightly different wording might fit the rhyme, the melody, and the structure of the song, letting it convey emotions without being a retelling of a story.
This way, Boots has enough flexibility to create songs out of her life, preserving the emotional essence of every story. As such, the project can be personal for her and still include reflections that do not necessarily show every little detail of her life. What matters most is the feeling behind each story and how those feelings contribute to the larger picture of adolescence that the EP presents.
Now available to listeners, Teenage Reality shows both the unique and universal side of this process. Boots’ experiences provide the project with its flavor, while the emotions involved leave some space for listeners to see themselves in the songs. She hopes the collection can offer that sense of connection while also revealing details about her that might never emerge during an ordinary conversation.
“Each song tells a different story, but every story comes together to form what my teenage reality has been,” Gracie Boots explains. Across the EP, those stories document a period of change and self-discovery while introducing an artist who is beginning to understand not only the person she is becoming, but the role she wants songwriting and music to play in her life.
