Lower Broadway Crash Claims One Life and Injures Three Others

One person died and three others were hospitalized after a vehicle struck four pedestrians in a Lower Broadway crosswalk Saturday, according to the Metro Nashville Police Department.
Police identified the driver as 87-year-old Thomas Cahill of Bowling Green, Kentucky. Investigators said Cahill drove a Ford Fusion through a red light at the intersection of Fourth Avenue and Broadway at about 12:30 p.m., striking four pedestrians who had the right of way.
Police said 58-year-old Timothy Wedlock of Australia died after being transported to a hospital.
The other victims have not been publicly identified. A 44-year-old man from Jacksonville, Florida, was listed in critical condition and underwent surgery Saturday. A 21-year-old woman from Knoxville, Tennessee, suffered serious but noncritical injuries.
A 58-year-old woman from Parsons, Tennessee, was listed in critical but stable condition at Vanderbilt University Medical Center, according to police.
Cahill was traveling with his 90-year-old wife and her caregiver. Cahill and his wife were hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries.
Investigators also spoke with the caregiver, who was sitting in the back seat. She told police she was using her phone and looked up after hearing the vehicle strike the pedestrians.
Nashville Mayor Freddie O’Connell released a statement following the crash.
“This is an incredibly tragic event, and my heart goes out to the victims and their families impacted by this horrible moment,” O’Connell said.
Police said Cahill showed no signs of impairment. The Metro Nashville Police Department’s Traffic Division continues to investigate what caused him to drive through the red light.
The crash has also renewed discussions among state and local officials about pedestrian safety on Lower Broadway, including whether protective street barriers known as bollards should be installed in additional locations.
