'Ella and Megan Tried to Warn Us': Fans Debate Riley Green’s Theo Von Interview

Riley Green joined comedian Theo Von earlier this month for an episode of “This Past Weekend,” but the nearly two-hour conversation left some fans wondering whether Green was joking, annoyed or simply ready to go home.

“This Past Weekend” is built around Von’s unpredictable conversations with comedians, musicians, actors and occasionally people with completely unconventional jobs or life stories. Guests rarely know where the discussion is headed, and Von’s wandering questions often make the awkward detours the entire point of the show.

Country music has increasingly entered that world. Ella Langley appeared on Episode 651 in April, discussing her Alabama upbringing, Nashville career and album “Dandelion.” Her playful chemistry with Von later became its own storyline after she brought him onstage during her Stagecoach performance.

Green’s appearance on Episode 669, released July 15, had a noticeably different energy.

The pair discussed Green’s upcoming album, “That’s Just Me,” his new role on “The Voice,” his Alabama property and the realities of being one of country music’s most eligible bachelors. However, the moment that fueled the most debate came when Green confronted Von about attending his surprise birthday party in Nashville. According to Green, Von showed up, grabbed two pieces of cake and quickly disappeared.

“You got cake and left,” Green joked.

Well, most people believed he was joking.

However, short clips from the episode quickly spread across Instagram and TikTok, where viewers accused Green of being rude, dismissive and unnecessarily cold toward Von. Others argued that Green’s extremely dry delivery was the joke and that the two bantered comfortably throughout the full episode.

“It’s called ‘dry sense of humor,’” one viewer commented.

“Please don’t make problems where there aren’t,” another wrote. “Great rapport between the two of them.”

One less-convinced viewer claimed Green was demeaning Von because the comedian is a known “Ella Fella.” Another critic took the discussion away from Green’s personality entirely and questioned whether he writes his own music.

The conversation even spiraled into fans criticizing the length of Green’s jeans, which, to be fair, did appear to stop several inches before his boots were ready for them. By that point, both his attitude and his pants were taking a beating online.

The reaction also gave fans another reason to revisit Megan Moroney’s “Who Hurt You?” The breakup track includes the line, “So cruel, but always kidding,” which some listeners now believe sounds remarkably similar to the personality Green displayed during the interview.

Moroney has not publicly named Green as the song’s subject, but she recently said she made the inspiration obvious enough that listeners could “Google it.” The song includes references to Alabama and other details that have fueled theories surrounding the two artists’ rumored history.

The speculation grew after Green teased “POS Like Me” on the same day Moroney released her album, “Cloud 9.” Green has denied that his song was a response, saying he wrote it approximately six months earlier and that the timing of his post was coincidental. He has since confirmed that “P.O.S.” will appear on his next album.

Naturally, fans have continued treating the two songs like opposing statements in country music’s most attractive feud.

The Theo Von interview also revived comparisons between Green and Langley. Where Langley’s episode was filled with easy laughs and playful back-and-forth, some viewers thought Green appeared guarded and occasionally irritated by Von’s meandering conversation style.

Green’s defenders insist that the viral clips do not capture the complete conversation. They argue that his blunt delivery has always been part of his humor and that Von clearly understood the bit. His critics remain unconvinced, with some fans claiming Langley and Moroney had been warning them about Green all along.

Either way, Green managed to turn a podcast promoting his album into a full-scale online personality assessment involving Ella Langley, Megan Moroney, surprise-party etiquette, songwriting allegations and the acceptable distance between a man’s jeans and his boots.That may not have been the promotional plan, but it still has fans talking about it weeks later.
