The son of late country superstar Johnny Cash, John Carter Cash, gifted Jelly Roll a gold cross necklace, formerly owned and worn by Johnny Cash. John Carter Cash stated he believed his father would want Jelly Roll to wear the necklace for the occasion, and that necklace was his father's favorite piece of jewelry in his collection.
Jelly Roll was greatly moved by this kind gesture and expressed his appreciation to Cash. "I live my entire life somewhere between two middle fingers and the grace of Jesus Christ. And I learned that from Johnny Cash, you know what I mean?" This gesture has been recognized as a passing-the-torch moment for country music. Jelly Roll and Johnny Cash share commonalities in themes such as redemption and second chances.
