Starting in January of 2027, no one born on or after January 1st, 2009 will ever be allowed to purchase cigarettes in the United Kingdom. This includes England, Scotland, Northern Ireland, and Wales, and applies to essentially anyone who will be seventeen and under. This is to combat the serious health problem in the U.K. that, in England alone, has caused roughly 64,000 deaths and 400,000 hospitalizations yearly.

The Tobacco and Vapes Bill will prevent the last four years of Gen Z from purchasing cigarettes
, alongside all of Gen Alpha and all future generations. Many are calling this a historic moment for the U.K., especially Health Secretary Wes Streeting, who claims, “Prevention is better than cure – this reform will save lives, ease pressure on the NHS, and build a healthier Britain.”
This has been a trend across the globe, as in 2023, New Zealand passed a similar bill, despite it being overturned the following year. The Maldives islands also have a similar ban. Perhaps, this ban in the U.K. will revolutionize anti-cigarette and vape campaigns, bills, etc., across multiple countries. One could only imagine what the United States would look like with such a ban in place.
The American Lung Association has found that in 2022, 11.6% of the U.S. population smoked
cigarettes. The Food and Drug Administration claims that nearly 1,500 individuals under the age of eighteen smoke their first cigarette every day in the U.S. (approximately 547,500 individuals under eighteen a year). This data shows that should the U.S. consider a similar ban, it would affect hundreds of thousands of people who currently reside in the U.S., gradually reducing the overall number of smokers to zero percent.

Are cigarettes essential to country music? Eric Church just drinkin’ a little drink without the
smoke a little smoke, or maybe Kacey Musgraves could blow bubbles instead of blowin’ smoke. Or Brad Paisley could just say he “didn’t” smoke ‘em one by one. But with the amount of changing and shifting the genre has done, especially in the last decade, there’s no telling what unexpected beauty could come out of the genre when future generations of songwriters and storytellers emerge.
Stay up to date on the U.K.’s ban on cigarettes for future generations and how this plays out on
a global level.
